Kansas City Royals: Seven potential successors to Ned Yost
By Cullen Jekel
The Kansas City Royals will face a tough situation when Ned Yost decides to step away. He’s arguably the best manager in franchise history, and replacing him will be no small task.
That’s why the Royals need to cast as wide of a net as possible to find the right person, looking high and low, looking in the majors, minors and college ranks for Yost’s successor.

Honestly, I’m enamored with the idea of hiring Steve Rodriguez, or some other collegiate manager. Dayton Moore is at his best when he’s getting creative and thinking outside the box. What’s more outside the box than hiring the manager of the Baylor Bears as the next manger of the Kansas City Royals?
Here’s how I would rank the seven I talked about in the previous slides:
- Steve Rodriguez, Baylor Bears manager
- Dusty Wathan, Philadelphia Phillies third base coach
- Matt Williams, Oakland Athletics third base coach
- Mike Jirschele, Kansas City Royals third base coach
- Sandy Alomar Jr., Cleveland Indians first base coach
- Stubby Clapp, St. Louis Cardinals first base coach
- Michael Ryan, Altoona Curve manager
Let me know who you would pick as Ned Yost’s successor, even if it’s not one of these seven.
