Kansas City Royals should play in Omaha every year

The Kansas City Royals played in the first ever MLB game set in Omaha, Nebraska this past Thursday evening, squaring off against the Detroit Tigers at TD Ameritrade Park. This hopefully becomes a yearly tradition for the Royals.

The Kansas City Royals need to be one of the teams playing in Omaha, Nebraska each year. For one, they already have a minor league affiliate in Omaha, so that right there is an easy connection. Kansas City is also the closest MLB city to Omaha, clocking in around three and a half hours on the road (usually it’s shorter, but some highways were shutdown due to flooding).

I made the trek out to Omaha, Nebraska to watch this game and am really glad that I did! It was a lot of fun, especially watching the Royals win 7-3 over the Tigers. As someone who has been to the College World Series multiple times before, I had a vague idea as to what expect, but this exceeded my expectations for sure.

For those who haven’t gone to a College World Series game before, it should be on every sports fan’s bucket list. This game was similar to the College World Series atmosphere, as yes, there were a lot of Royals and Tigers fans in the stands, but for the most part, it was a lot of people with different rooting interests as far as teams go.

More from Kansas City Royals

It really did seem like everyone enjoyed themselves though, and that’s the most important part.

Even though Alex Gordon didn’t play in front of his (basically) hometown crowd, it was cool seeing the players embrace everything. It was probably nice for them to have a sellout crowd to play in front of, which isn’t something Kauffman Stadium has been able to say all season (unless Opening Day ended up being a sellout?).

Some of the highlights game wise:

  • Nicky Lopez hitting his first career home run in the same stadium that he played at in college (he attended Creighton). Lopez had a good night in general, going 2-4 with the home run and another hit. Omaha has been good to him.
  • Homer Bailey throwing six shutout innings and only surrendering two hits during that time.
  • An insanely awesome catch by Cheslor Cuthbert in the seventh inning that likely prevented two runs from scoring.

Hopefully Major League Baseball continues this new “MLB in Omaha” event every year and it’d be even cooler if the Kansas City Royals got to take part in it each year. As I stated earlier, they do have a minor league affiliate there, so it makes sense, but they’re also the closest to Omaha too.

It’s not like Royals fans in Kansas City are flocking out to the K to watch this team play. Why not play in front of fans who will pay to watch the product?
