The Kansas City Chiefs made a smart move on Wednesday by extending their All-Pro right tackle Mitchell Schwartz on a one-year deal worth around $11 million.

This was a smart move by the Kansas City Chiefs. For one, it shows they’re willing to pay players for working hard and that can’t be understated. Second, when a franchise has a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes, they need to make sure their offensive line is up to the task of protecting him.

Mitchell Schwartz has proven worthy of an extension and good for the Chiefs for getting this deal done. Offensive linemen don’t generally get any type of love, but Schwartz deserves every bit of recognition he gets. He’s awesome.

Schwartz spent the first four years of his career with the Cleveland Browns and opted to sign with the Chiefs during the 2016 offseason, where he’s remained ever since.

Next to being an all-around bad ass on the right side of the offensive line, the best part about Schwartz is that he’s durable. The guy hasn’t missed a single start during his seven-year career. In today’s injury-heavy NFL, especially along the offensive line, that’s a huge accomplishment.

While the guard position and, more recently, center position have been inconsistent, the two tackle spots are far from it in Kansas City. Schwartz has had that right tackle spot on lock since joining the team in 2016 while Eric Fisher is holding his own at left tackle, making it to his first Pro Bowl this past year.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s important for the KC Chiefs to have a rock solid offensive line because they have Mahomes taking snaps. Not only that, but there are some darn good pass rushers in the AFC West that the Chiefs have to see multiple times each year. Schwartz limits those guys from getting after Mahomes and that’s worthy of an extension for sure.

While the Chiefs need to get a deal done with Chris Jones, this contract with Schwartz was a brilliant move. He had some time left on his original deal, but when a right tackle is as good as Schwartz is, you make extending him a priority. Jones should hopefully be next on the extension list.

Schwartz is heading into year four with the Chiefs and he’ll now be with this organization through the 2021 season, hopefully longer (assuming he’s still at his peak when the 2021 season is going on).

What do you think of this extension, Chiefs fans? Are you for it or do you think the team could have waited to make this move later?
