With the 2019 season already looking bleak, general manager Dayton Moore and his staff must capitalize on the size of their draft pool as well as picking four times in the first 100 picks.

One of Granger’s comments that struck me was this one: “Teams don’t need to find a Mike Trout in every draft, but you need to find major leaguers.”

More from Kansas City Royals

That takes me back to the Kansas City Royals drafting Moustakas second overall in 2007. That selection capped three straight years where the Royals drafted no higher than number two.

With those picks they selected Alex Gordon, Luke Hochevar, and Moustakas. None of those guys will get into Cooperstown, but all three played roles in the franchise’s turnaround and were around for the World Series victory in 2015.

The Kansas City Royals are at an exciting spot right now. With that second overall pick, they’ve got a shot at landing an incredible talent. The pressure is on, sure, but isn’t it always in professional sports?

With a farm system on the rise, Moore must nail the majority of these draft picks to ensure the rebuild continues to march forward.
