Roster Hole: Free Safety (possibly starting)
Available Free Agent: Tre Boston
The mind boggles that Tre Boston remains unsigned this late in the offseason. But the fact remains that he is available, and the Chiefs, with their only free safeties being rookie second-round pick Juan Thornhill and second-year player Armani Watts, should still be vying for his services.
I fully expect Thornhill to be the Chiefs starting free safety alongside Tyran Matthieu at strong safety when the season kicks off. Right now, that’s the best-case scenario for a Chiefs defense that’s been re-tooled on the fly.
However, with so many questions regarding this Kansas City roster, now and beyond (with certain free agencies looming), it would be more ideal for general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid to bring in a veteran to pair with the Honey Badger.
3rd and 10... handoff to Jones. It’s troubling enough that that’s the playcall here, but check out Tre Boston. There’s no way the safety can be expecting run here but he diagnoses it before it’s even handed off. He saw something on tape or GB has a tell that he keyed on. pic.twitter.com/7qfKLNS1qD

By adding Boston, the Chiefs give immediate competition to Thornhill to bring out the best in him. This is not meant to offend Watts by any means, but Boston is a five-year veteran with 44 starts under his belt compared to Watts’ five career appearances, all last season on a defense that closely resembled a sieve.
Boston turns only 27 next month. If he joins the Chiefs and shows he can still play (of which I have doubt), then the Chiefs have yet another young defensive back that can continue the grow with the rest of the defense. A safety group of Boston with Matthieu, Thornhill, Watts and Jordan Lucas looks a lot better than one without the former North Carolina Tar Heel.
