After a career that started with him as the third round pick of the KC Chiefs in 2008, Jamaal Charles is signing a one-day contract with the organization that drafted him. He’ll officially retire as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

News circulated on Tuesday, thanks to 610 Sports Radio, that former KC Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles would be signing a one-day contract with the team and retiring as a Chief.

This is great news, especially considering that Charles wasn’t as highly thought of as he should be amongst Chiefs fans. Some of that is his own doing, as once he landed with the Broncos in 2017, he made the comment of how he’s “always wanted to be a Bronco”. That obviously rubbed Chiefs fans the wrong way and seemed like an unnecessary shot.

With Charles signing this deal, we can forget his brief time as a Bronco ever happened and celebrate his legacy in Kansas City again. Charles currently holds the top spot in all-time rushing yards for the Chiefs with 7,260 yards.

He also had 43 rushing touchdowns and caught another 20 during his time in red. Oh, not to mention he hauled in 2,457 receiving yards. Not bad for a running back.

What most Chiefs fans are going to remember most about Charles was when he absolutely destroyed the Oakland Raiders in the Black Hole in 2013. Charles went off for five total touchdowns and 195 RECEIVING yards that day in what will go down as one of the single best performances ever by a Chiefs player.

In his nine years with the Chiefs, Charles rushed for over 1,000 yards in five seasons. The four seasons he didn’t hit 1,000 were in 2008 (rookie year), 2011 (missed nearly entire season with an injury), 2015 (injury), and 2016 (injury).

Were it not for injuries piling up on him near the end of his career, Charles would have finished his time in Kansas City and never would have had to go to Denver or Jacksonville (yes, he played there too).

When healthy, Charles was an absolute game changer. He was the only reason worth watching the Chiefs in that horrid 2012 season (1,509 rushing yards that year with six total touchdowns) and tore up the league in 2013 with 12 rushing touchdowns and seven receiving, giving him 19 total that year. That’s insane.

Injuries will likely prevent Jamaal Charles from ever getting in the Hall of Fame, which is a bummer, but make no mistake… The guy will be up in the Ring of Honor at Arrowhead Stadium when he’s eligible and that will be a glorious day for everyone.
