Mizzou Football: Drew Lock drafted 42nd overall by Denver Broncos
By Shade Piper
Drew Lock had an excellent career for Mizzou football, but he is now moving on to the next stage of his career after being drafted 41st overall by the Denver Broncos.
Looking at Drew Lock’s Mizzou football career, he has been the best Tiger’s quarterback since Chase Daniel. Lock fell well short of Daniel’s all-time passing yards record, but was just three touchdowns shy of breaking the all-time Mizzou passing touchdown record. As far as the record books go, he is pretty tightly locked into the second position in Mizzou’s all-time quarterback rankings.
After a great Mizzou career, Lock will look to continue that success in the NFL. Former Tiger quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Chase Daniel have been mostly restricted to back up roles since entering the league, so Lock will look to break that trend and become the most successful former Tiger as an NFL player.
Many thought returning for his senior season was a mistake, but as you can see from his draft position it didn’t hurt him too much. His junior year Lock passed for 3,964 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions and his senior year his stats regressed a little with 3,498 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. While his stats weren’t as gaudy his senior year, he did increase his completion percentage by five percent and decreased his interceptions by five as well.
Despite the statistical regression in his senior season, it was impossible for NFL teams to ignore the arm strength, field vision, decision-making, and NFL size. He does have some accuracy issues at times, but his potential definitely outweighs his flaws. If the Broncos can do a good job of developing him he should develop into a great starter in the NFL.

Lock’s Fit with the Broncos
After the Broncos traded up and used the 41st overall pick on Lock, they are hoping to finally get their quarterback of the future. This should be an excellent fit for Lock and is an absolute steal for Broncos. Nobody expected Lock to make it out of the first round, so to get him in the second at 41 overall is a crazy steal.
This is a great fit for Lock he gets to learn under a Super Bowl winning quarterback in Joe Flacco and one of the greatest ever in John Elway. This will be an excellent scenerio for Lock to mature as a quarterback, but he should actually have a shot to compete for the starting spot as well. Flacco isn’t what he once was and Lock is a first round talent. Denver should have a good quarterback competition on their hands.
This isn’t the best case scenario for Mizzou-Chiefs fans, but hey at least you’ll get to see him twice a year when the Broncos play the Chiefs!
