Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes needs a new contract
By Casey Adkins
Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm last year, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first full year as a starter. It’s time to think about getting him a new contract.
It might be early, but the Kansas City Chiefs need to start thinking long-term with Patrick Mahomes. Now look, the Chiefs can’t officially sign Mahomes to a contract extension until the next league year due to a provision in the last CBA. That isn’t to say they can’t get the basics in place now and put the finishing touches on it next year.
Let’s talk this through, shall we?
First, we know the Kansas City Chiefs intend on keeping Patrick Mahomes here for as long as possible. This is not only from Chiefs GM Brett Veach but Mahomes’ agent has said that he wants to spend his entire career here as well (see quote below).
Obviously that could be your standard GM and agent speak, but I seriously doubt it. It makes sense because Veach knows that Mahomes is the next great NFL quarterback and you don’t let that kind of talent walk out the door. It’s doubtful that Mahomes wants to go through the unknown that is NFL Free Agency, even if it means he is going to make a ton of cash.

Next, the Chiefs just cleared out a ton of cap space. Teams don’t clear out over 30 million in cap space unless they have a plan.
There is the big Chris Jones extension coming up, which hopefully gets done this offseason. The only other big contract potentially coming up is also Tyreek Hill‘s, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about his off the field situation.

Those two contracts are not even coming close to what Mahomes is going to get.
Lastly, what really got me thinking about it, was the two local endorsements Mahomes got this offseason. For those outside the area, Mahomes signed deals with Goodcents and Hy-Vee, which is a big get for them.
This puts those two chains on the map outside of the Midwest by having the reigning MVP behind them. It’s also hard to believe these companies would sign him to an endorsement deal without being something in place on the Chiefs side. The money Mahomes is going to bring in even in the short-term is going to be a boatload, but no business goes into a deal like this, especially local chains.
Mahomes is in Kansas City for at least the next three years. The Chiefs have been blessed with having the franchise quarterback they have been looking for since Len Dawson.
Fans also better believe that even if a deal isn’t in place yet, one will get done. There’s no way Patrick Mahomes will leave Kansas City, barring something catastrophic happening.
Chiefs fans rejoice, we have our guy and he is ours.
