The Kansas City Chiefs have been linked lately in trade rumors surrounding All-Pro corner back Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey could greatly upgrade the secondary.

One of our own fellow Fansiders, Kelly Thompson, wrote a great piece breaking down trades for the Kansas City Chiefs that should happen but won’t. Kelly writes,

"Veterans over rookies, for win-now teams. This is the best player on the trade market, at the position the Chiefs are most likely to take in the first round anyway. Take the experience, use the same pick, transform the defense."

He suggests that the Chiefs send their first round pick in this draft (29th overall) to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for Ramsey, straight up. The Chiefs get a sure fired player at a position of need and send a pick they were likely going to use on defensive back anyway.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Personally, I would love to see this trade happen. It would immediately shore up a position that the Chiefs have been trying to fill since they traded Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams last offseason. That’s just the googly-eyed fan in me though.

Ramsey is 24 years old and is already widely considered the best player at his position in all of the NFL. However, he has been known to run his mouth and when things weren’t exactly going great for the Jaguars.

Last season, he was front and center of the negative attention. For someone who wanted to talk all that trash, he sure didn’t have the tenacity to back it up when things weren’t going the way he intended.

All that aside, Ramsey is a straight up baller and a cornerstone player for any defense on any team. With that though comes a price, and he’s entering the final year of his rookie contract, pending the team’s fifth year option.

This is where and why the Chiefs likely won’t get involved.

Arguably the biggest reason the Jaguars would want to trade their best young player is because of the type of salary he is going to demand. The Chiefs are still in the midst of cleaning up their own salary cap issues and have major contracts looming with players like Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Chris Jones.

Next. Chiefs as Avengers. dark

While Jalen Ramsey is 100% worth trading the 29th overall pick for, the Jaguars would be silly to settle on just that one pick at the back end of the first round. His value is much higher and while he has been a bit outspoken, he certainly has not been a bad person off the field. If he is truly being shopped, there will be a team willing to give up more.

Couple that with the Chiefs needing to get younger and cheaper and you can see why this deal just doesn’t make sense. Still, in a boring time in the NFL, a fan can dream!
