The consolation prize for such an ugly season in 2018 is a very high draft pick with just about every option on the table. Regardless of what the Orioles do at number one, the KC Royals must hit on the second overall pick.

More from Kansas City Royals

It seems to be down to Adley Rutschman and Bobby Witt Jr., at least if one is going off current prospect rankings. Both of those young men play extremely important positions, and both could bolster the Royals’ organizational depth as well as provide them with a superstar in the making.

But the other options would all fit well, too. A team can never have enough pitching, and Stewart and Lodolo will go a long way to helping, preferably, the starting rotation in the next couple of seasons, or, less preferably, the bullpen.

Vaughn and Jung both could provide prodigious power, though their defensive capabilities may come into question. And Misner could add even more flexibility to an outfielder that currently seems in flux.

Hopefully, the Royals can sift through everything regarding these players (among others), and make the right call. This is the highest the Royals have drafted since selecting Mike Moustakas No. 2 overall back in 2007.

That turned out pretty well. The team’s recent draft record hasn’t been as good. Yet with so many high-ceiling options in this year’s draft, in all likelihood, Dayton Moore will nail this pick.
