The Kansas City Chiefs need depth at tight end and on Tuesday, they made strides to adding depth behind Travis Kelce by bringing in Blake Bell.

Blake Bell, the recent signee by the Kansas City Chiefs, spent the first three years of his collegiate career as the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners. His senior year he transitioned to tight end and that’s what he went into the 2015 NFL Draft as.

The 49ers took Bell in the fourth round of that year’s draft and he played in San Francisco for two years. Bell also played for the Vikings in 2017 and was a member of the Jaguars this past season.

Bell has yet to really put up any impressive numbers, but he hasn’t had a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes while with any of these teams. Plus, Bell won’t have to handle being a starter in Kansas City, as Travis Kelce has the starting spot locked and loaded.

To this point, Bell has 30 catches for 357 yards and has yet to find the end zone. Mahomes will surely get the ball to him in 2019 and it’s a high possibility that Bell finally gets an NFL touchdown this upcoming season.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Bell is actually from Wichita and played high school football at Bishop Carroll. His uncle (Mike Bell) played for the Chiefs from 1979-1991 and that was the only team he ever played for. Bell’s father (Mark Bell) is also an NFL alum, having spent time with Seattle, Baltimore, and Indianapolis from 1979-1984.

This isn’t a move that’s going to make Chiefs fans jump for joy, but it’s a necessary move. The team lost Demetrius Harris to free agency and the other tight ends on the roster have yet to catch a pass in the pros. Were Kelce to go down for whatever reason (knock on wood please), the Chiefs would be in deep doo-doo at the tight end position.

Bell isn’t going to provide what Kelce provides, but he’s a serviceable backup and that’s all the Chiefs need right now. They should still consider drafting a tight end, as this year’s draft class is full of great tight end prospects, but now it’s not as high of a need for Kansas City.

Blake Bell is on his fourth team in five years, but hopefully the Kansas City Chiefs are the right landing spot for him. Mahomes is going to love throwing the ball to this guy.

What do you think of this signing, Chiefs fans?
