Nebraska basketball has found their next head coach; It’s Fred Hoiberg, formerly of Iowa State and of the Chicago Bulls. He’ll now be tasked with trying to make Husker hoops relevant.

For fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, basketball season typically isn’t something we get excited about. The program has yet to win a single game in the NCAA Tournament and even just making the tournament is a challenge for the Huskers.

Well, the university hired Fred Hoiberg to take over for Tim Miles, who was fired earlier this week. Hoiberg is a big name and should be able to make Nebrasketball a relevant force in college hoops.

Hoiberg has only coached at one Division I school and that was at Iowa State from 2010-2015. He led the Cyclones to four tournament appearances and also won two Big 12 Tournament titles.

Hoiberg finished his collegiate coaching career at Iowa State with a 115-56 record and, as mentioned before, made it to the tournament in all but one season at the helm in Ames. He did so well with the Cyclones that the NBA came calling and the Chicago Bulls eventually lured him away.

Hoiberg didn’t have as good of a resumé in the pros, posting a 115-155 record and was fired not even midway into the 2018-2019 campaign. It’s a different ball game in the NBA and while Hoiberg might see that as the end game, coaching in Lincoln for a few years and rebuilding his resumé could be key for him moving forward.

This is a fantastic move for Nebraska basketball and the fans.

As nice of a guy as Tim Miles was, he wasn’t the long-term answer. He led the Huskers to March Madness one time and they were knocked out in the first round, as usual. Hoiberg has the ability to bring a winning atmosphere to Lincoln and that’s all Husker hoops fans want to see: A winning program and a few tournament wins every now and then.

With Scott Frost coaching the football team and Fred Hoiberg now coaching the basketball program, Nebraska has brought on big names to head both of their prominent programs. Will Hoiberg be the long-term answer? Fans are hopeful, but it could take some time to get the program off and running.

This past season was supposed to be a special one for the Cornhuskers, but once conference play began, everything went to hell. Hopefully Fred Hoiberg is the answer and can get the Huskers to the tournament on a yearly basis!

Go Big Red!
