Chiefs Kingdom has some really great years ahead with Patrick Mahomes at the helm.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

That shouldn’t stop the Chiefs from working to improve the backup quarterback position and the quarterback room as a whole. With Chad Henne only on the books for another season, Kansas City will need to look to the future with who plays behind Mahomes. Drafting one in the later rounds this year or next shouldn’t be out of the question.

With such an incredible young star at the number one spot, this puts the Chiefs in a unique position to groom backups for their own team as well as others for trade potential. Other teams with nominal quarterback play will have to work to protect their QB2 and QB3 position. The Chiefs don’t have to do that as long as Mahomes stays healthy.

Right now, it’s likely that Chad Henne, Chase Litton, and EJ Manuel will be in the quarterback room through the 2019 season. That’s not bad considering that room as a whole would contain two first-round draft picks in Mahomes and Manuel as well as one second-round draft pick in Henne. Even so, this likely won’t cause the team to grow complacent at the position.

It’s a wild league at times, though, and the Chiefs have an aggressive general manager that keeps things exciting. It really would be great to see Veach continue to be aggressive with this group and stack up the talent behind Mahomes.

Building a Super Bowl caliber team will likely cause Kansas City to become a preferred destination, even as a backup.
