The Kansas City Chiefs have parted ways with some of their big name veterans, but one veteran who will be sticking around for at least one more season is fullback Anthony Sherman.

Fullbacks aren’t as big in today’s NFL, but Kansas City Chiefs fans love them some Anthony Sherman. Fortunately for Chiefs Kingdom, Sherman is returning to the team for the 2019 season in what will be his ninth NFL season.

There had been rumblings that the Chiefs and Sherman would be reunited, but no official word came about until Friday when Field Yates tweeted that it had been confirmed. Sherman would for sure be donning a Chiefs uniform this coming season. Huzzah!

This isn’t a move that is going to make people jump for joy, but Sherman is an experienced player who has given a lot to the Chiefs organization. Re-signing him after an offseason filled with releasing/trading popular players is a move that fans appreciate.

Sherman has been with the Chiefs since 2013 when Andy Reid got to town. He was acquired in a trade with the Cardinals and since then has become a low-key fan favorite, whether it’s for his play on the field or his wardrobe during training camp every summer.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

While Sherman isn’t someone who gets a lot of carries or touchdowns, he provides solid blocking  and is also a great contributor on special teams. Neither of those things get noticed by the casual football fan, but for those who are more locked in, it’s not hard to appreciate Anthony Sherman and what he brings to this organization year after year.

There was some speculation earlier in the offseason that the signing of former Packers fullback Aaron Ripkowski could be the end of Sherman as a Chief, but apparently that won’t be the case. Ripkowski was signed to a reserve/future contract and with Sherman being 30 years old, it seemed like this could a perfect time to move on from him.

Instead, the Chiefs are giving Sherman one more season at the very least. His numbers have never been anything to write home about, but fullbacks aren’t exactly supposed to post eye popping stats. They’re typically utilized as blockers and on special teams, just like Sherman is.

The Chiefs offense doesn’t need much fine-tuning this offseason, as they’re coming off arguably their best offensive season ever, but Anthony Sherman is yet another name who can come in and help the offense flow. He’s a proven player and fans should be excited to have him back in the Kingdom!
