The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the most lethal offenses in football last season, if not the most lethal. With the complete tear down on defense, one would think the Chiefs aren’t thinking about the offensive side of the football.

Many rumors swirled about the Kansas City Chiefs’ interest in Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, but these rumors never turned into reality. The most recent offensive target linked to the Chiefs, which is a very realistic option, is Jordy Nelson.

There are reportedly several teams interested in Nelson and the Chiefs are on Adam Schefter’s short list of interested teams.

Could the former Kansas State product return close to home for his 11th NFL season?

The Fit

Jordy Nelson would be a great fit for the Chiefs. He is 33 years old and seems to be past his prime, but the Chiefs have enough offensive fire power that they would only need him to be a third option in the offense.

Nelson could flourish in this role and in this offense. As essentially a replacement for Chris Conley, Nelson could potentially have better production for the Chiefs than even a younger Conley produced last season.

Nelson is a better athlete than given credit for even after injuries and in his advancing age, but where he will really make his difference is his size, route running abilities, and veteran leadership. He is a precise route runner, which will continue to allow him to get open for targets even as his athleticism falters, and his 6’3″ frame and reliable hands could also give Patrick Mahomes a big end zone target.

Last year with the Raiders, Nelson had 63 receptions for 739 yards and three touchdowns. Nelson was, for a lot of the season, the best receiver on the Raiders’ roster last season. With the Chiefs, Nelson would likely be a fourth option, but could still match or improve on that production in a Mahomes-led offense.

There will likely be over 5,000 yards and more than 50 touchdowns to be spread around, so even as fourth option it is easy to see how Nelson could improve on last seasons’ production just from being in a better offense.

A Boy from Kansas

What makes this fit even more exciting and realistic is the fact that Nelson grew up just a couple of hours from Arrowhead Stadium in Riley, Kansas.

Nelson also stayed local and walked on at Kansas State in hopes to continue his football career at the school where his parents owned season tickets. He went on to have a great career there and propelled himself into NFL draft consideration, where he was selected in the second round by the Green Bay Packers.

Nelson’s family still resides in the same place in Kansas where the run a farm. The most interesting thing about this is, in a 2015 ESPN article, Nelson reportedly returns to Kansas to work on his family farm each summer.

Nelson also wants to return to the family farm to help his brother run the family farm full-time after he retires, according to another article from Mercury News. Maybe Nelson would take a hometown discount to finish his career in Kansas City with the Chiefs.

In Kansas City, he could be close to the farm and his family could come to all of his home games. In addition to being close to home, he would have to love to playing with Patrick Mahomes and enjoy joining a team with chances of getting him another Super Bowl ring before retirement.
