Former Mizzou football wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Friday after an incident leading to his arrest resulted in a probation violation.

Dorial Green-Beckham, former Missouri Tigers wide receiver, was reportedly arrested after jumping out of a window in efforts to evade authorities, who were executing a search warrant. He was found with marijuana on his possession, which led to the arrest. After this most recent misstep, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been for the former Tiger.

While this misstep certainly does not mean a Dorial Green-Beckham return to football is completely out of the question, it does add more baggage to the once top football prospect.

Simply put – Green-Beckham has been disappointing people since his days as a Tiger. A lot of Missourians, Mizzou fan or not, feel the same way about DGB. He has several fans pulling for him even despite the numerous errors.

More from Missouri Tigers

The wide receiver was the highest ranked prospect from the state of Missouri dating back as far as Rivals has records of high school player rankings. DGB was not just the top wide receiver, but the top overall recruit in the country when he picked Mizzou in 2012.  This also makes him Mizzou’s only top ranked commitment as far back as Rivals keeps track of their high school player rankings.

DGB’s career has so far been the ultimate “what could have been.”

DGB had 12 touchdowns in 14 games at Mizzou as a sophomore before being dismissed as a result of an arrest. Despite the dismissal from Mizzou, he landed at Oklahoma and stayed on the sidelines in Norman for a year where he was able to stay out of trouble and get to the NFL Draft.

In the 2015 draft, he was projected as a late first or early second round selection despite having two marijuana related arrests and an an arrest for an alleged role in a burglary which lead to his dismissal from Mizzou football. He didn’t play for the Sooners at all.

Despite that, he was compared to Randy Moss by Mike Mayock and even drew comparisons to Julio Jones and  Calvin Johnson prior to the draft. He ended up as a second round pick (40th overall) to the Tennessee Titans.

After just two seasons in the NFL, however, he found himself out of the league and back in his hometown of Springfield, Missouri. This is where he was arrested on December 19, 2018 after jumping out of a window in an attempt to evade authorities whom were executing a search warrant, according to the Springfield News Leader.

DGB was found with marijuana in his possession and as a result was sentenced to 90 days in jail, as this was a violation of his probation from a 2017 case where he admitted to driving under the influence.

Judge Harmison said that he hopes this jail time will be good for Green-Beckham and hopes to see him back on the football field. According to DGB’s lawyer Tyson Martin, his client was receiving interest from teams in the Canadian Football League.

So maybe this isn’t the end of DGB’s football career, but either way a lot of people will always see him as a “what could have been” story. Here’s to hoping this is the wake up call he needed and at just 25, still has time to get his football career back on track if he so wishes.
