These decisions are always hard for teams to make.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Dee Ford and Justin Houston have poured their hearts and souls into this Chiefs team. Being able to turn these two players into four or maybe five quality players to plug along the defense is too enticing to pass up, however.

The NFL is ultimately a business. Sentiment doesn’t win championships, getting ahead of the curve does. Freeing cap space and allowing Veach to load new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s defense with players that fit his 4-3 scheme is the most pressing matter this team faces.

The pass rush my be weakened, but with a player like Chris Jones still on the roster, the Chiefs should be able to find enough bodies to more than make up for it. The hard truth is that Houston refused a paycut and costs too much, and Dee Ford is a smaller player facing a scheme change and a payday that the Chiefs simply can’t afford.
