Kansas City Chiefs fans should prepare themselves for a busy free agency season. Not only will the Chiefs look to dish out contracts, but they’ll be attempting to trade away guys too.

In years past, the Kansas City Chiefs have had to take a seat during free agency due to bad contracts given out in the past (thanks for that, John Dorsey). While there are still some not so great contracts within the organization, the Chiefs were able to dabble in free agency a bit last year.

This year should be quite an active one for the Chiefs as far as free agency goes.

For starters, there’s the recent news swirling about Justin Houston on the brink of being released. That’s a big enough storyline right there, but it won’t stop there for the Chiefs.

As Ian Rapoport mentioned in the tweet above, there’s talk of giving Tyreek Hill a big time contract and also tagging Dee Ford. Oh, and Ford could be on the trade block too. The Chiefs might end up parting ways with both of their premier pass rushers after a season in which they led the league in sacks.

The Houston news isn’t shocking, as he hasn’t lived up to the six-year $101 million deal he signed after that dominant 2014 season. He was still effective as a pass rusher when on the field, but that was the issue. He wasn’t on the field much due to injury.

Dee Ford is the younger of the two, but it says a lot that after a 13 sack season, fans are still skeptical of giving him a long-term deal. That’s because prior to his brilliant 2018 campaign, Ford was looking like a first round bust for the Chiefs.

Out of the three moves Rapoport noted above, not many would argue against giving Hill an extension. He’s been a Pro Bowler in each of his three seasons and went from being predominantly a special teams guy to the number one wide receiver. He had close to 1,500 yards receiving last year and a whopping 12 touchdowns, so yeah… I’d say an extension for Hill is imminent.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

The Chiefs have also been linked to former Giants safety Landon Collins, who won’t be slapped with the franchise tag by his old team. If Collins really is a priority for the Chiefs this offseason, then man oh man, this free agency session could get crazy.

Free agency is a fun time of year for NFL fans because A) It’s something to talk/write about B) It’s a chance for the team to address needs C) It gives us more of an idea as to how the team might draft.

I didn’t even get into the slew of players that the Chiefs are more than likely going to part ways with this month (Chris Conley, Mitch Morse, to name a few). Letting those players walk will be a whole other bunch of storylines.

Buckle in, Chiefs Kingdom. Free agency is going to be a wild ride.
