Kansas City Chiefs: There’s No Point In Trading For John Ross

The Kansas City Chiefs sport one of the most potent offenses in the NFL and while they should continue to add onto that success, Cincinnati Bengals receiver, John Ross is not a priority.

The 5’11” speedster out of Washington is just two years removed from being the ninth overall pick and according to multiple sources including NFL Networks Ian Rappaport, Cincy is already shopping the young receiver. The Kansas City Chiefs shouldn’t be interested.

John Ross ran a 4.22 40-yard-dash at the Combine two years ago, propelling his draft stock and garnering many comparisons to our own Tyreek Hill. That 40-time alone made him the fastest player on last year’s Madden 17 video game, stirring up a ton of debate about who really is the fastest player in the league.

Ross missed most of his rookie season due to injury and wasn’t able to haul in a single reception. He did have a bounce back year in 2018, scoring seven touchdowns on 21 receptions for 210 yards in just 13 games. There is no telling what the market is for Ross yet, but I would be very surprised if the Chiefs showed any interest at all.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Kansas City has bigger priorities they need to focus on then adding another speedy, undersized receiver who has yet to play a full season of NFL football. This isn’t to say that the thought of a healthy Ross on the field at the same time as Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, and Tyreek Hill isn’t intriguing.

Adding world class speed to the third best offense in league history sounds like fun, but when you can’t stop anyone, what’s the point? The Chiefs have three picks in the first two rounds and need to get stronger on defense with those selections. Trading any of their picks in the first four rounds for Ross doesn’t make much sense.

But what about the money?

Ross is due to make $5 million over the next two seasons, per Spotrac, and that’s not a ton of money, but it’s money that needs to be spent on keeping Tyreek Hill and Chris Jones in Kansas City. The Chiefs also have to consider the franchise tag that’s likely to be placed on Dee Ford in the next month or so.

I understand the excitement and intrigue surrounding John Ross running routes for Patrick Mahomes next season, but there just is no point for the Kansas City Chiefs to make this deal.
