Detroit Lions

Pick: 8

Current Quarterback: Matthew Stafford

Before last season, Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn fired Jim Caldwell after the team went 9-7, but missed the playoffs. To replace Caldwell, Quinn hired former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

The Lions missed the playoffs again in 2018, falling to 6-10. The organization last won a playoff game in 1991.

Since being selected with the number one overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Matthew Stafford has been the team’s starting quarterback (save for 2010 when he was mostly injured). In that time, despite Stafford putting up prolific numbers, the Lions have gone 66-75 in the regular season and 0-3 in the playoffs.

Recently, Quinn made comments that indicated the Lions would be open to drafting Stafford’s eventual successor as soon as this year’s first round. Could that be Lock? He certainly can’t be ruled out, especially if when the number eight pick rolls around, Haskins and Murray are off the board.

And unlike the Giants and Jaguars, the Lions seem to be less in “win-now” mode and more in a “change the losing culture” mode. That would enable Quinn to take a quarterback without throwing him into the fire next season.
