The Kansas City Chiefs were one game away from the Super Bowl in 2018 and while they need to address their defense, a new question has come to light.

Our friends over at NFLmocks.com did an interesting write up about five free agent signings that could lead teams to a Super Bowl. Their pick for the Kansas City Chiefs was interesting.

The author, Erik Lambert, brought up some interesting points about free agent running back, Le’Veon Bell and how he could be the missing piece to the Chiefs Super Bowl run. Erik writes,

"Try to imagine it. Le’Veon Bell, one of the most versatile running backs in recent memory and with a fresh body after taking a year off playing in an Andy Reid offense with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback. That offense is already stacked. With him running the ball, it almost wouldn’t be fair."

Obviously Le’Veon Bell paired with Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce would be the dream equivalent to what the Golden State Warriors have in the NBA. An All-Star lineup that would be damn near impossible to game plan for and honestly, would help fill the void after the loss of Kareem Hunt.

There is one major issue here with this scenario, the money. Erik also writes,

"Kansas City is projected to have over $27 million in cap space which would be enough to at least make a run at Bell’s asking price. However, it’s not enough. The Chiefs have a ton of their own free agents to deal with including two vital pieces in pass rusher Dee Ford and center Mitch Morse."

Bell held out all of last season from the Pittsburgh Steelers to avoid injury while on the one year franchise tag. Bell wasn’t willing to risk himself in hopes of landing a major contract from another team in 2019.

In all fairness to the Steelers, they have made offers to Bell including a reported, five-year $70 million deal that included $14 million in annual salary. That would’ve easily made him the highest paid running back in the NFL but according to Bell, that wasn’t enough.

Bell will hit free agency in the coming months and I don’t think the Chiefs are the slightest bit interested nor should they be. No offense to Bell, or any running backs, but that position isn’t worth that kind of money anymore. Teams can find serviceable replacements at any round of the draft, hence guys like Alvin Kamara (third round) and Marlon Mack (fourth round) to name a few.

The Chiefs also found some stability in journeymen running back, Damien Williams. I can’t imagine the Chiefs will make Williams an every down back, but he proved this past year that he can be a valuable asset and the Chiefs gave him a two-year contract extension back in December.

The Chiefs have too many holes elsewhere to be spending big on a running back.

While I agree it’s a position that they need to address through free agency or the draft, it’s not a position they need to break the bank on. With Patrick Mahomes as the signal caller for presumably the next 10-15 years, the Chiefs can get by with just another guy at the position.

If they do find another home run in the backfield though, it’s just icing on an already delicious cake.

What do you guys think? Do you think the Chiefs should make a serious run in the Le’Veon Bell sweepstakes?
