More from Kansas City Royals

This season is going to be another slog. There are going to be blow-outs and meltdowns with the Royals on the wrong end of things more often than not.

But there’s also some hope.

The focus should be on getting the younger guys plenty of opportunities. That means letting Phillips and Ryan O’Hearn hit against left-handers, letting Brad Keller work through jams without turning to the bullpen, giving Mondesi plenty of leeway should he falter at the start of the season.

In the grand scheme of this rebuild, the goal should be look back at 2019 as a pivotal year, one in which Dayton Moore adds the next missing piece, one in which the team improves, and one in which the next core of young players figure out that they can compete against quality competition on a daily basis.
