Patrick Mahomes won the NFL MVP award on Saturday and this is hopefully only the beginning of what’s to come with Mahomes as the quarterback of the KC Chiefs.

The NFL MVP award has been given out since the 1957 season. Spanning from that 1957 award to the 2017 award, no member of the Kansas City Chiefs had ever won the prestigious honor.

Until now.

On Saturday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named NFL Most Valuable Player after his dominating performance in the 2018 season. No more can people say that no member of the Chiefs has been an MVP because Mahomes has broken that record.

Mahomes most definitely deserved the award. Yes, this is a Kansas City site, but I’m not a biased homer. If Drew Brees deserved the award more, I’d admit to it. Same with Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, or whoever else was worthy of winning this year’s honor.

More from Patrick Mahomes

None of those men came close to accomplishing what Mahomes did though.

Mahomes, a 23 year old in his first full year as a starter in the league, threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns while leading his team to a 12-4 record, third straight division title, and earning a one-seed in the playoffs.

Mahomes has already done things that previous KC Chiefs quarterbacks were unable to accomplish and he’s doing so in year one at the helm. He won a playoff game at home, got his team to an AFC Championship Game, and now, the icing on the cake, won the franchise’s first ever MVP award.

The best news out of all of this is that this is only the beginning of what Patrick Mahomes is going to do for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Even the most optimistic of fans didn’t plan on this type of season for KC in 2018. They had a new quarterback taking over and a rebuilding defense. Yet, Mahomes took the league by storm and got the Chiefs oh so close to the Super Bowl. A year in which many thought 8-8 would be a good season saw the team win the one-seed and just miss out on the league’s biggest game of the year.

Chiefs Kingdom will be thinking “Super Bowl” in 2019 and they have every reason to believe that. The reason why is Patrick Mahomes. Even with a crappy defense and a tough schedule, the Chiefs accomplished more than any of us were expecting, which goes to show how good this kid really is.

If this is indeed only the beginning of this run, we’re in for a fun ride with Mahomes as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback.
