When the Kansas City Chiefs signed Kelvin Benjamin for what appeared to be a late season run at the Super Bowl, it seemed like a low risk/high reward type of move. It ended up being a move with no reward whatsoever.

Kelvin Benjamin has had quite the up and down season throughout his time in the NFL. He was a first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers and then spent time with the Bills and most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The initial move was a bit surprising, but at the same time, wasn’t entirely crazy. The Chiefs had an explosive offense, led by Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce. Sammy Watkins was effective when on the field, but injuries prevented that from being an every game event.

In other words, Benjamin could have been implemented in this offense. Things didn’t quite go that way however, as the former first round pick didn’t do much in Kansas City. He appeared in just three games as a Chief, hauling in a measly two catches for 26 yards and didn’t play at all during the postseason.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

When the Chiefs signed Benjamin, it was a move that most fans were okay with. Here was a guy who went over for 1,000 yards as a rookie in 2014 and had playmaking abilities. He was traded from Carolina to Buffalo due to the Bills needing wide receivers for their playoff run in the 2017 season.

After the Bills traded Tyrod Taylor and drafted Josh Allen, Benjamin simply wasn’t a fit in Buffalo anymore. The Chiefs opting to bring him in was fine, but at the end of the day, it didn’t work out.

Farzin Vousoughian of Arrowhead Addict wrote a piece on how the Chiefs should re-sign Benjamin. I’m not against that idea, but would really like to see the Chiefs utilize him as more of a tight end than as a wide receiver. With his size, this is a move that could make a lot of sense for both sides.

The Chiefs had just three tight ends on their 2018 playoff roster and only one of them is a sure thing to be on the 2019 team (Travis Kelce). Transitioning Benjamin into the tight end role could get him on the field more and we know that Mahomes doesn’t discriminate. If a guy is open down the field, Mahomes will do his best to get him the ball.

While Kelvin Benjamin did next to nothing as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, perhaps they give him another chance on a one-year “prove it” kind of deal. What would you think about that, Chiefs fans?
