The Kansas City Royals haven’t been too active in free agency this winter, but one of their former fan favorites is still a free agent. Is there any chance of bringing him back to KC?

Normally rebuilding teams don’t bring in a lot of talent via free agency and the Kansas City Royals have mostly followed that blueprint so far this offseason. They signed Chris Owings a few months ago and also inked Billy Hamilton to a one-year deal. Otherwise, they’ve been pretty quiet.

One intriguing free agent still on the market is former Royal Mike Moustakas.

Moustakas was a first round pick by the team in 2007 and went on to appear in two World Series with the club, winning one in 2015. Moose is beloved by Royals fans and when he hit free agency last year, it was tough for fans to see him not get any love on the open market.

Moose ended up re-signing with the team that drafted him on a one-year deal after the offers he was likely expecting weren’t there. He finished the season with the Brewers after KC traded him and Moustakas got to play in the NLCS with Milwaukee.

Even with those playoff games in Milwaukee under his belt, we’re seeing similar results right now with Moustakas. He’s still without a team for the 2019 season.

There hasn’t been one clear standout for Moustakas as of now and that brings up the question: Could the Royals opt to re-sign their old third baseman once again?

The Royals have options at third base with Hunter Dozier being the likely starter at that position on Opening Day. Cheslor Cuthbert hasn’t turned into the player the Royals were hoping he would become and we don’t know what the team has in Kelvin Gutierrez just yet. Nicky Lopez is also someone who the Royals could decide to put at third in the future, just to give him some at bats and big league appearances.

With those players in the organization, re-signing Moustakas wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense, but none of those players are the third baseman that Moose is. He’s experienced there and brings power to the plate.

The Kansas City Royals probably won’t bring Mike Moustakas back in 2019, but the move wouldn’t be crazy. Their third base options aren’t wowing anyone and Moose is definitely one of the most popular Royals of all-time. Would you want to see him in a Royals uniform again?
