KC Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes has to be flawless the rest of the way
It’s been fun watching KC Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes light up the rest of the league this year. With that said, however, the Chiefs have no defense meaning Mahomes has to carry his team for the duration of the season.
Having a top tier quarterback is great and Kansas City Chiefs fans are discovering that to be true in 2018.
For many of us, Patrick Mahomes is the first real quarterback a lot of us have had the pleasure of watching in Kansas City. Trent Green was fantastic in 2003 and Alex Smith had his moments, but Patrick Mahomes is doing some incredible things at just 23 years of age.
That being said, the Kansas City Chiefs will go as far as Patrick Mahomes can take them this year. That might seem like a good thing, but it’s not because he IS the entire team.

One of my main arguments for why Mahomes deserves the MVP award is that the KC Chiefs are not 11-4 if Mahomes isn’t the quarterback. If Alex Smith was still the starter this season, with how bad this defense has looked lately, the Chiefs would be lucky to even be vying for a playoff spot in 2018.
The Chiefs are in a good spot right now despite their defense being so bad, but it’s all been because of Mahomes. In the four games the Chiefs have lost this season, the defense has been the one to blow it for the team.
Mahomes threw for at least two touchdowns in all four of those losses, including six touchdowns in a 54-51 loss to the Rams. Teams shouldn’t score 51 points and lose the game, but the Chiefs did just that last month.
Looking ahead to the playoffs (which we can do, as the Chiefs will for sure be partaking), the other five teams currently penciled into the postseason all have the ability to put up points. If the Chiefs defense can’t muster a single stop (like they were unable to do in Foxborough against the Patriots), then Patrick Mahomes can’t make any mistakes.
It’s not fair that this 23 year old kid has to do everything, but unless this defense figures out how to stop the run and break up a few passes now and then, that’s the sad reality of the 2018 season.
Patrick Mahomes is an MVP caliber player this season, but he has to be absolutely flawless for the rest of the 2018 campaign. The KC Chiefs’ Super Bowl hopes depend on how far this kid can carry the team.
