This time last year, the Kansas City Royals had arguably one of the worst farm systems in all of baseball. Things have changed for the better for the Royals in that department though.

A rebuild can be a lot speedier of a process if the team in rebuild mode has a good farm system. That the Kansas City Royals did not a year ago, but according to Jim Callis of MLB.com, their farm system is one of the most improved from last year.

Callis started off by mentioning that the Royals weren’t at the bottom of the barrel when it came to their minor league rosters, but they were close to it. He noted that the Royals had a strong draft this past year and that definitely boosted their rankings.

The best sentence from Jim Callis’ piece is quoted below,

"Several prospects already in the system also boosted their stock, with outfielder Khalil Lee showing all-around tools and outfielder Seuly Matias, catcher MJ Melendez and first baseman Nick Pratto teaming (along with several draftees) to help Class A Lexington win the South Atlantic League championship."

This is a great sign for the Kansas City Royals, who need these prospects to step up and be what Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Danny Duffy, and all of those guys were to the 2014 and 2015 teams.

Seeing the Lexington Legends win a championship was definitely a positive, as those will be the players the Royals will hopefully have in the big leagues in the next few years. Callis mentioned Khalil Lee, Seuly Matias, MJ Melendez, and Nick Pratto leading the way for the Royals’ Class-A affiliation.

Callis also linked to the Royals’ top 30 prospects and all four of those players just listed make the top ten. Most recent first round pick Brady Singer is the top prospect with other first round picks Jackson Kowar and Daniel Lynch sitting at four and eight respectively.

The Royals didn’t draft well when they were a playoff contender. In fact, it could very easily be argued that their last good draft pick was Eric Hosmer, which was over a decade ago.

Since then, they’ve had either not enough big league productivity on a consistent basis (Aaron Crow, Christian Colon), injuries (Bubba Starling, Kyle Zimmer) or simply not panning out (Ashe Russell, though to be fair, he’s still quite young).

The jury is still out on what the future holds for these top prospects, but for the first time in several years, Kansas City Royals fans should be excited for when these young kids get their major league call-up.
