Kansas football has their head coach. They have their new recruiting class. Now all they need is to figure out their quarterback situation.

Early Signing Day came and went for Kansas football and they welcomed in ten new recruits to their program. Out of those ten recruits, one was a quarterback.

The Jayhawks currently have four quarterbacks listed on their roster for 2019. With the new recruit quarterback, that makes five total. So what should we make of KU’s quarterback situation?

The newly signed recruit it Thomas MacVittie out of Mesa, Arizona. MacVittie is a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com and he played the last two years at Mesa Community College, meaning he has the experience to potentially win the job in 2019 and 2020.

The most experienced quarterback on KU’s roster at the moment is Carter Stanley, who will be a senior next year. Stanley has had more than enough opportunities to show he’s the answer as the Jayhawks’ signal caller and he’s struggled in the role.

Last year, Stanley played in just four games, throwing for 304 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. The year prior he had 1,108 yards, four touchdowns, and seven picks in eight games. As a freshman in 2016, he threw for 959 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in nine games.

Stanley has the experience under center for the Jayhawks, but he hasn’t delivered in the big spots. He was benched last year in favor of Peyton Bender, who finished out the year at quarterback.

The other three quarterbacks on the roster are Miles Kendrick, Billy Maples, and Miles Fallin. Kendrick was on the team last year as a redshirt freshman, appearing in four games and throwing for 100 yards and a touchdown. Kendrick showed off some juice with his legs too, rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown.

More from Kansas Jayhawks

Maples is a redshirt freshman out of Park Hill High School in Kansas City, who is 6’3″ and 220 pounds. Rivals.com lists Maples as a pro-style quarterback.

Fallin is a sophomore from Canyon Country, California, who is also a pro-style quarterback and weighs in at 6’4″ and 188 pounds.

Rivals.com did a piece on who would win the starting quarterback job last summer and pegged Peyton Bender as who would be the winner with Stanley and Kendrick being contenders for the starting gig as well.

With Bender graduating, the most important position on the team is vacant for 2019. Kendrick and Stanley remain as front runners again, but MacVittie could potentially come in and win the job. The JUCO transfer threw for 1,064 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in five games at Mesa Community College last year.
