The Kansas City Chiefs turned heads a bit when they signed wide receiver KelvinBenjamin to their team on Thursday. The Chiefs need to get him involved right away if possible.

It’s been fun watching the Kansas City Chiefs this season, as their offense has been absolutely sensational. With that said, it was a bit surprising when they opted to bring Kelvin Benjamin into the fold.

Benjamin was a first round draft pick by the Panthers in 2014, the year where so many good receivers were available. The Chiefs had a chance at Benjamin that year, but went with Dee Ford instead. That was a move that, until recently, was frowned upon and questioned by Chiefs fans.

Benjamin was flipped to the Bills at the trade deadline last year and he was not having a good season in Buffalo in 2018. Then again, not many people are, but Benjamin in particular was struggling to do much of anything.

The former Florida State product had 23 receptions for 354 yards and just one touchdown. The Bills had their fair share of quarterback woes while Benjamin was there this season, jumping between Nathan Peterman to rookie Josh Allen to Derek Anderson to Matt Barkley, so it’s no wonder Benjamin couldn’t get much going.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The release was surprising, but the Kansas City Chiefs are giving Kelvin Benjamin a chance, and honestly… He could make an impact on this team. Some might counter with “The Chiefs already have a bunch of weapons! Why do we need another?”, I’ll respond with, “The more, the merrier!”

Yes, the Chiefs have a bunch of weapons. And I mean A BUNCH. Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Chris Conley, and Demarcus Robinson highlight the receivers and tight ends and Benjamin has the build where he could almost be utilized as more of a tight end rather than a receiver.

Benjamin was at his best as a rookie in 2014, when he was one of few weapons for Cam Newton and the Panthers offense. That year saw Benjamin go for over 1,000 yards and find the end zone nine times. He was a wrecking ball whenever the pigskin got in his hands and the Chiefs have to find that player.

With Sammy Watkins out for the rest of the regular season, Benjamin can come in and immediately help this offense get down the field. Patrick Mahomes targets anyone and it’d be hard to miss a target like Benjamin, who 6’5″ and built like a truck.

The Chiefs defense is doing them little to no favors, so in order for this team to make a run next month, their offense will have to be firing on all cylinders. If Kelvin Benjamin ends up being the difference maker, then so be it. If it doesn’t work out, then no harm done.
