The Kansas City Chiefs are now without their star running back and must move forward with other options. Rookie Darrel Williams deserves a chance to prove himself in these final games.

It’s a tough blow losing a player of Kareem Hunt‘s stature, but the Kansas City Chiefs did what they felt was best and now the organization must move forward with other running backs. On the roster currently are Spencer Ware, Damien Williams, Darrel Williams, and recently re-signed Charcandrick West.

Re-signing West signifies that the Chiefs don’t plan to utilize Darrel Williams much and that’s a bummer. Sure, he’s a rookie and we’re unsure of what he truly can bring, but rookie running backs are the best get in the sport, as they’re cheap and have less wear and tear on their bodies.

Teams don’t need elite running backs anymore and a perfect example of that is rookie Phillip Lindsay of the Broncos. Lindsay went undrafted and is gashing defenses on a weekly basis. I highly doubt the Broncos expected that when they picked him up after the draft concluded.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs could have a similar story with Darrel Williams. The LSU product went undrafted this year and Kansas City scooped him up. He’s played in just two games this season, but has yet to notch a single carry.

Spencer Ware and Damien Williams are decent one and two options, but if we’re talking about a future option for this franchise at running back, why not give the rookie a chance? Darrel had 820 yards and nine touchdowns during his senior season at LSU and spent his entire career behind guys like Leonard Fournette and Derrius Guice. While always the backup for the Tigers, he proved to be an effective one and the Chiefs should give him a shot.

While this is a unique situation to be in (parting ways with a talented young running back, that is), the Kansas City Chiefs have a potential in-house option that they can roll with. Ware should remain the starter, but Darrel Williams at least deserves a chance to get some carries here and there. He might be the answer or he might not be, but the Chiefs will never know if they don’t get him into the ball game and give him the rock.

With four games remaining in the regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs have a long way to go before locking up any type of seed in the playoffs. They’ll need their run game to be dominant in order to do that and giving Darrel Williams a chance to be that guy for them in the future could be the difference.
