With Kareem Hunt being released on Friday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs must turn to Spencer Ware to handle the running back duties for the rest of the season. They’re lucky to have Ware in a Chiefs uniform.

By now, most Kansas City Chiefs fans are aware of the news that circulated on Friday afternoon and into the evening. A TMZ video of Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt emerged and hours later, he was released from the organization in shocking fashion.

With Hunt no longer in Kansas City, it’s good that the Chiefs have Spencer Ware available to take over in his absence. Ware was initially the starter heading into the 2017 season and he didn’t lose his job due to poor performance. No, Ware was injured during the preseason and Hunt stepped in and did a great job as a rookie.

From there, it was evident that Ware wouldn’t be getting his job back unless something drastic happened. And here we are now, as something drastic has indeed happened. Within hours of Hunt’s video leaking, the Toledo product was released from the organization and now the Chiefs must put their faith in Spencer Ware.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Fortunately, Ware is a solid backup and could probably be a starter on most teams in the league. His main year as the starter was in 2016, where he racked up 921 yards and three touchdowns along with 447 yards through the air and two receiving scores.

This season hasn’t been a great one for Ware, as he’s had just 22 carries for 124 yards and one touchdown, with most of that yardage coming in the blowout win over the Bengals. The Chiefs have definitely been a more pass happy team throughout their first 11 games, as indicated by their 51 points put up in their last game.

That has led to, at times, the run game being ignored more than fans would like. Kareem Hunt was having a decent season up to this point, but the Chiefs organization did what they felt was best and now the former third round pick is no more in Kansas City. Whether you agree with it or not, Spencer Ware will now carry the load.

While losing a player like Kareem Hunt is rough, the Chiefs have a capable backup in Ware, who is more than capable of jumping into the starting role. Damien Williams will now be the backup after mainly spending the season as a special teams guy. He’ll now get the chance to see some more meaningful carries.

This has been a stressful situation for the franchise, but a decision has been made and it’s time to move forward with Spencer Ware as the starting running back in Kansas City. Luckily, he’s shown he can do a great job in the role in the past.
