Nebraska football has ripped off four wins in their last five games and the program appears to be headed in the right direction under Scott Frost.

It’s been awhile since Nebraska football was truly a powerhouse, but the Cornhuskers have proven over the last month and a half that they’re on the right track to getting back to that point. On Saturday, the Huskers hosted the 6-5 Michigan State Spartans, a team that had been ranked on and off throughout the season, and came out on top.

It wasn’t an easy win, as Nebraska trailed 3-0 at the half and looked helpless offensively. Michigan State’s swarming defense was winning the battle, and honestly did so for most of the day, but the Blackshirts of Nebraska stepped up too, holding the Spartans offense to just six points.

Nebraska, a team that had relied mostly on their electric offense, had to rely on their defense on Saturday and the Blackshirts did their part. They held Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi to just 146 yards through the air and picked him off once while allowing the Spartans to rush for 143 yards.

The Huskers offense wasn’t as dominant as it had been most of the season, but they did enough to get the win. Adrian Martinez had his worst start in well over a month, completing just 16 of 37 passes for 145 yards and not finding the end zone though the air or with his legs.

The Nebraska run game was slowed down for the first time in awhile too, as the unit barely got over the 100 yard mark. Devine Ozigbo, however, became the first 1,000 yard rusher for the Huskers in a single season since Ameer Abdullah did it in 2014.

With this win, fans definitely can get excited for what the future has in store for Nebraska football. Their first three wins of the season, as dominant as they were, weren’t necessarily “impressive” wins.

Minnesota and Illinois are struggling in conference play this year and Bethune-Cookman was scheduled as a cupcake team after the Akron game got canceled. This win over Michigan State, however, is a win the Huskers can point to and say they beat a legitimate team.

Nebraska also went toe-to-toe with Ohio State a few weeks ago, a team that was ranked in the top ten (and still is). Were it not for a few errors early on, the Huskers might pull that game out.

This victory showed that Nebraska can win even when their offense isn’t at the top of their game. Their defense stepped up and took care of business and picked the offense up, much like the offense had done for them throughout the season. This is a young team that keeps improving each week and that’s dangerous for the other teams in the Big Ten.

Next week is the final game of the season and it’ll take place in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes. Iowa has had Nebraska’s number over the past few years, but this year feels different for sure. If the Cornhuskers can knock off Iowa next week (or at least play them close), fans will REALLY be hyped for the 2019 season.

For good reason too. It really does feel like Nebraska football is back and that’s an exciting thing to think about! Go Big Red!
