The Kansas City Chiefs are big timers in 2018 and as a result, Patrick Mahomes wound up on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which has some fans up in arms. That’s because of the “Sports Illustrated curse” and fans need to ignore that.

The Kansas City Chiefs are rocking and rolling, which has a lot to do with their star quarterback. Patrick Mahomes has led the Chiefs to a 9-1 record to start the season and they’re currently sitting atop not just the AFC West, but all of the AFC.

Mahomes is a big, big reason for why the Chiefs are as good as they are. When Alex Smith was running the offense, the Chiefs were usually okay, but there was always a crash that would last for several weeks. We’ve yet to REALLY see that with Mahomes yet.

On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated released a new edition with a picture of Mahomes on the cover and that has fans freaking out. The reason for that is because there’s been a long history of teams and athletes who appear on the cover being cursed afterwards.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

A local example is from 2007 when Sports Illustrated put Kerry Meier, a wide receiver on the Kansas Jayhawks football team, on the cover. At that point, Meier and the Jayhawks were 11-0 and looking like they were on their way to the top of the mountain.

Well, the very next week, Kansas dropped a game to arch-rival Missouri and their perfect season was no more. What’s worth noting there is that even though KU lost, it might have been better because they went on to win the Orange Bowl weeks later.

Mahomes has had an amazing season so far, spinning 31 touchdowns to just seven interceptions and it’s apparent he’s the real deal at quarterback. The Chiefs offense is humming with him at the helm and there’s no reason to buy into him slowing down simply because he appeared on the cover of a magazine.

I get the superstitious Chiefs fans out there (hell, I still believe there’s a curse with this team come January), but let’s see this thing play itself out. Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league this year and should be in the MVP category. When’s the last time that legitimately happened for a Chiefs quarterback this late into the season?

Let’s sit back and enjoy Mahomes Mania while it’s so prominent. If anyone can kick that Sports Illustrated curse, it’s Patrick Mahomes.
