Kansas basketball opens their 2018-2019 season on Thursday in an exhibition game against Emporia State.

It’s finally hoops season for Kansas basketball and that means these early season games will come against Division II opponents in exhibitions. The first game to open up the year is against Emporia State of the MIAA, a Division II conference.

It’s called an exhibition game for a reason and that’s because KU will smoke the Hornets. The point of these exhibitions is to get the team some minutes and gelling before the tougher tests come to town.

Kansas will dive right into the tougher opponents this season, with the tenth ranked Michigan State Spartans on the schedule for their first true game of 2018-2019. That will take place in the State Farm Champions Classic, set in Indianapolis on November 6th.

More from Kansas Jayhawks

Before we look more into that game, however, it’s worth noting that since this game isn’t against a big time opponent, fans might have a tougher time finding it than others.

KANSAS BASKETBALL NOTES

It’s the first game of the season so there will be some sloppiness on the court, but for the most part, this should be all KU. The Jayhawks are coming off a loss in the Final Four last season and will look to get back to that pinnacle in the 2018-2019 campaign.

Kansas is returning a few notable players this year, but the biggest name is big man Udoka Azubuike. Doke opted to return to Kansas for his junior year and that was probably best, as his free throw shooting a year ago was less than stellar. Hopefully he practiced that during the offseason.

Also returning to Lawrence is senior LaGerald Vick and junior Mitch Lightfoot. Vick had planned to go pro, but ended up coming back to Kansas. Lightfoot mainly filled in due to injuries to other players, but that experience he had last season will help the Jayhawks tremendously this year.

There are a lot of newcomers to KU’s team, including twin brothers Dedric Lawson and K.J. Lawson, both coming over from Memphis. Quentin Grimes is also a newcomer along with Devon Dotson.

We don’t have much to go off of for this year’s team, but it’s still an exciting time for KU hoops fans because college basketball is officially back!
