KC Chiefs: Run game heating up adds whole other level to offense
The KC Chiefs are one of the most exciting offenses to watch in the NFL right now and with the rushing attack finally heating up, it’ll be nearly impossible to stop this offense from putting up points.
Through the first three weeks of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs were mainly a high-flying air raid attack, led by Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs franchise quarterback threw for over 250 yards in the season opener and has thrown for over 300 yards in every game since then.
The difference with the Chiefs in the last four games, however, is that they’ve gotten the run game going and that adds a whole other level to what this offense can do. As proven on Sunday night against the Bengals, when both the run game and the passing game are on point, the Chiefs offense is darn near unstoppable.
Kareem Hunt took the league by storm last year as a rookie and held the title of leading rusher. While some thought a sophomore slump might hit the Toledo product, he’s been as good as ever over the past month.

Hunt hit the ground running in week four against the Broncos, posting his lone 100+ yard performance of the season. Since then, he’s had at least 80 yards on the ground in each game and probably would have hit 100 on Sunday had he not been pulled for Spencer Ware in the fourth quarter.
What’s great about the rushing attack heating up is that it makes this offense even tougher to stop. Mahomes has proven that he can lead this offense and he has a wide array of weapons ranging from Tyreek Hill to Travis Kelce to Sammy Watkins.
When the Chiefs were more of an air raid attack, they were much more predictable and defenses could pounce on them a little easier. We saw that against the Broncos in week four and Hunt was able to gash the Donkeys with his legs.
Running the ball isn’t as important in today’s NFL as it used to be, but it’s still an area of the game that can’t be ignored. When teams run the ball, they’re controlling the clock and that’s essential in football.
The Chiefs are probably going to be in a bunch of shootouts this year, which might take away their ability to hand things off to Hunt. If they possess the lead, however, running the football is something Kansas City has to stick with. They’ve shown they can now be dominant in both aspects offensively and that could be huge come January.
