Mizzou football fans were hopeful that quarterback Drew Lock could have his best season yet and be in contention for the Heisman Trophy award. That, in all likelihood, will not happen for Lock and the Tigers.
All offseason long, Mizzou football fans heard “Drew Lock Heisman this” and “Drew Lock Heisman that” to the point where they started to buy in. Their quarterback was a potential Heisman Trophy candidate this season and they weren’t going to expect anything less.
Well, those dreams are long gone now, as Lock has likely fallen out of the Heisman Trophy race. The prestigious award is given to the best player in college football (normally a quarterback or running back) and two of the last three have been quarterbacks.
Lock started the season strong against teams like UT-Martin and Wyoming, but once the competition got tougher, his numbers declined greatly. Throughout the first three weeks, Lock had thrown for 1,062 yards, 11 touchdowns, and one interception. In his last three games, however, Lock threw for 567 yards, one touchdown, and five interceptions. Not exactly Heisman numbers sadly.

The knock on Drew Lock during his collegiate career has been that he can’t play consistently well. It’s one thing to beat up on schools like UT-Martin and Wyoming, but if Lock truly was one of the best players in college football, he’d be putting up similar numbers against conference schools, which he’s failed to do throughout the course of his career.
Lock had a really rough go of it against Alabama last week, completing just 13 passes for 142 yards with one touchdown and two picks. While his Heisman dreams are a pipe dream by this point, Lock can still build his draft stock, which probably fell during his last three games.
As for who could win the Heisman this year, Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State seems to be the leader of the pack right now. The Buckeyes quarterback has been sensational, throwing for 2,331 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just four picks. Now THOSE are Heisman Trophy numbers.
The Missouri Tigers haven’t had a Heisman Trophy winner in their existence and the last time they had a candidate was Chase Daniel, back in 2008. Drew Lock appeared to give them a good shot at breaking that ten-year drought, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like Lock will be attending that ceremony.
MU still has a season to play though and Lock needs to continue to work hard toward becoming a first round pick.
