Late Night in the Phog has been a Kansas basketball tradition since 1985 when Larry Brown held his first scrimmage that year just after midnight on the first day they were allowed to practice.

Kansas basketball has many traditions but few are exciting as Late Night in the Phog. Fans flock to Allen Fieldhouse every year to catch their first glimpses of the players that will represent the Jayhawks that season.

It’s more than just to see a usually sloppy scrimmage with little defense; it’s about getting to know the players. It’s about learning their personalities through skits and dance numbers. It’s about bad comedy and the fans making connections to the young men and women they will have vested interest in for not only the rest of this season but beyond. It’s about impressing recruits and convincing them this is the best place in the country to play basketball.

The scrimmages are just a little something to whet the appetites of the fans and give them something to look forward to over the next four weeks or so before the first exhibition game on October 25th.

As usual, a lot is expected of this version of the Kansas Jayhawks. They are ranked second in the country in CBS Sport’s preseason poll. NBC Sports has them as the team to beat and ranked number one.

Fans will be eager to see transfers Dedric Lawson, K.J. Lawson, and Charlie Moore, as well as the highly ballyhooed freshmen Quentin Grimes, Devon Dotson, David McCormack, Ochai Agbaji, and Elijah Elliot.

Of course, this group of young men will want to extend the Jayhawks incredible string of 14 straight Big 12 regular season championships.
