Kansas City Chiefs: Chiefs Showing Interest In Seattle Safety Earl Thomas
The Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as a candidate for a trade for Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas. What does this mean for the defense?
The Kansas City Chiefs are still without their All-Pro safety Eric Berry as they faceoff against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3. All reports say that Berry is day to day, but has been in that same spot since before the season began. Kansas City has now emerged as a contender to trade for Seattle Seahawks safety, Earl Thomas.
Most of the talks around trading Earl Thomas has been about the Dallas Cowboys. After a game against the Cowboys back in December, Thomas reached out to head coach Jason Garrett stating his interest to play for his longtime favorite team and for Garrett to come to get him.
Seattle has already turned down a second-round pick from Dallas insinuating they either want more or to wait till after they play Dallas in Week 3. However, Kansas City is in dire need of some safety help with both of their starters still not on the field. Daniel Sorensen is on IR designated to return, and Berry has yet to practice since early August with the team.

Which could be a big indicator of why the Chiefs are interested in making a trade for Thomas. Kansas City feels they are a Super Bowl contender this season, and finding a top talent for the back end of the defense which is the largest concern would go a long way. Ron Parker has looked good, but Eric Murray has been someone the Chiefs need to replace.
Thomas is another All-Pro caliber safety like Eric Berry that could bring that same presence to the defense. His versatile ability to play all over the defense and mask weaknesses would tremendously help defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. Does this mean that Kansas City is not expecting Berry back anytime soon?
The other possibility is that GM Brett Veach sees an opportunity to not only have an insurance policy in place for if Berry gets hurt after returning to the field but to double down and have the best safety duo in the league. Both of these Pro Bowl talents on the field at the same time would make me feel a million times better about the secondary.
Kansas City will have to manage some CAP room to make this trade. While they are tight on money, there are always ways to manipulate the CAP room. The Chiefs also look to have a large amount of money this coming offseason losing the $17 million in dead cap from the John Dorsey regime, and nearly $48 million to work with.
Should Kansas City make a move for Earl Thomas? What would you be comfortable giving up for another Pro Bowl safety?
