The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes have surpassed a touchdown record through two weeks of football. Can they do it again in Week 3?

The Kansas City Chiefs have surprised the NFL with back to back outstanding offensive performances in the first two weeks of the season. Not only that, but they have done so while playing on the road against two tough opponents. Between the two games against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City has put up 80 combined points offensively.

The hype train surrounding new starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes this offseason has been unreal. It seems that even those high expectations in Kansas City have been surpassed as the Chiefs refuse to allow their defensive inefficiencies to hold them down. Mahomes also beat the record for most touchdowns thrown in first three career starts with ten on the books.

Must I remind you that in his first career start which was last year in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes didn’t throw a single touchdown? That’s right, all ten of those touchdowns have come in the first two weeks of the season which is another new record. He’s the second quarterback to throw four or more touchdowns in the first two games of a season with New England Patriots former quarterback, Drew Bledsoe.

More from Patrick Mahomes

It still gets better as ten touchdowns between two consecutive games is yet another record. Before Patrick Mahomes threw his tenth touchdown of the season, the record for most touchdowns in teams first two games was nine since 1970 which was held by Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. Six touchdowns in a single game is also tying a franchise record with Len Dawson.

It’s mind-blowing at what Patrick Mahomes has been able to do in the start of the 2018 season. While I was all aboard the hype train coming into the season, I didn’t even see this kind of production happening straight out of the gate. The fact that Mahomes could break even more NFL records going forward, including in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers, is incredible.

The first record that Mahomes could shatter in Week 3 is most passing touchdowns in teams first three games of a season. Currently, Peyton Manning holds the throne with 12 passing touchdowns to start the season in 2013. Tom Brady comes in second with 11 touchdowns in 2011. Patrick Mahomes has ten currently but has yet to play his third game of the season. If he throws for three touchdowns on Sunday, there is another record on the books.

If you want to talk about most passing touchdowns in first four career starts, Patrick Mahomes is tied for second with Marc Bulger at ten touchdowns. The current holder of the record is Mark Rypien who has 12 touchdowns to his first four career starts. Once again, if Patrick Mahomes throws three touchdowns on Sunday, it’s another record he will top.

That’s still not even the best part of all of these records. One might argue that he’s been able to break these records due to the number of passing attempts Mahomes has made given the high octane offense. Well, Kansas City ranks 30th in passing attempts through the first two games of the season. That’s right, and he’s breaking records while throwing only 55 times which is almost half of the NFL leader in attempts.

Given that the Chiefs are finally returning to Kansas City for their home opener, I see no reason why Patrick Mahomes can’t shatter all of these records listed above. The stadium will be electric as they welcome their franchise quarterback home in his first start at Arrowhead Stadium. I also expect for the offense to keep the pedal to the metal on offense this week.

dark. Next. How do the Chiefs fair among AFC contenders?

Mahomes has looked better than anyone could have expected through the first two games of the season. With the surrounding cast of playmakers, the offensive line looking good in pass protection through two games, and the plays that head coach Andy Reid has dialed up for Mahomes should not go unnoticed. I can’t wait to be talking about another record-breaking game following Sunday’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
