The Kansas City Chiefs offense was beyond explosive in Week 2 to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sammy Watkins emerged as a major weapon.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense was outstanding on Sunday afternoon to take the victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Winning in a shootout 42-37, Kansas City has put the league on notice with its unstoppable offense defeating two teams they were expected to lose against. One major weapon that stepped up in a big way against the Steelers was wide receiver, Sammy Watkins.

Kansas City made two major signings during the free agency period of the offseason. One of those was Sammy Watkins who signed for a massive three-year deal worth $48 million. The contract left many fans confused as it seemed aggressively high for a player that hasn’t proven worth that kind of money in the NFL.

Watkins was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as a first-round pick at fourth overall. He went on to play just three seasons in Buffalo, only one of those gaining over 1,000 yards rushing. Watkins was just short of reaching the marker in his rookie season putting up 982 yards. He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams last season toward the end of the preseason.

Los Angeles failed to utilize Sammy as they lined him up in one position the entire season. Rams quarterback Jared Goff missed him over the top game after game as he favored players like Cooper Kupp. The Rams released Watkins at the end of the season which led to him signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Coming into the season, the hype was unreal surrounding the playmakers on the Chiefs offense. Unfortunately, Watkins was slow to get going with struggles during the preseason. Between dropped passes and miscommunication on routes, or fans feeling a lack of effort on some targets, it was unclear what Kansas City really had in Watkins.

During the Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Watkins was not a major part of the gameplan. Kansas City revolved their offense around the connection between Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. That isn’t to say Watkins didn’t make any plays as he made a couple of hard catches in key moments of the game.

Yet the concern that the Chiefs made a mistake this offseason still haunted some Chiefs fans. The question was when should fans start to worry about Watkins? That question was thrown away when Kansas City made Watkins a major part of the gameplan against Pittsburgh. Watkins came away with six catches for 100 yards and one rushing play that he took for 31 yards on a jet sweep.

Given the amount of talent on the Chiefs offense, defenses can’t afford to try and take away just one playmaker. As we saw from Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense on Sunday, there’s always someone available to make a big play. Watkins showed his great playmaking abilities and forced the defense to gameplan for him.

With Watkins providing the Chiefs with not only production but as a vital threat, Kansas City’s playmakers earn more one on one matchups against defenses. Watkins displayed his speed and playmaking abilities after the catch on multiple plays. He’s not only just a deep threat, but a threat coming out of the backfield apparently as well.

dark. Next. Chiefs Steal A Victory In Pittsburgh

The Chiefs spent nearly the entire game spread out forcing the Steelers defense to play in space. Mahomes made it look easy as he threw for 326 yards and six touchdowns on the day. It’s clear that Kansas City has one of the most explosive offenses in the league in 2018.
