Nebraska football is 0-2 in Scott Frost’s first year and this is not how Husker fans expected the first year of the Frost regime to go.

Sometimes it takes time to rebuild and win games again and Nebraska football fans are learning that the hard way in 2018. After their first scheduled game was canceled, the Cornhuskers had to play a much tougher Colorado team for their season opener.

While there was excitement throughout the first half of that one, it ultimately ended with an L on the Huskers’ schedule. Even with the loss, however, there were plenty of positives to be taken from that game.

The same cannot be said for their second game of the year, which came against Troy. Give props to Troy. They’re not afraid of the big dogs in college football, having beaten a ranked Missouri Tigers team several years ago, taking down LSU on the road last year, and this year coming into Lincoln and beating a vulnerable Husker squad.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers

Troy was the better team on Saturday and it showed big time. Nebraska’s defense was pretty good, but the offense barely mustered up any points to give their defense a hand. It was frustrating and Nebraska fans have every right to be irritated by this slow start.

In early August, I wrote a piece about how fans shouldn’t expect immediate success under Frost and so far, that was good advice from me. To be fair, when I wrote the article, I didn’t think the Huskers would be 0-2 to start the year. I figured they’d beat Akron (and they probably would have had the game actually occurred) and Troy, but Colorado was a toss-up.

The Scott Frost era is off to about as poor of a start as it could be, but that’s NO reason to give up on the guy (not that anyone is already). It takes time to build something special and Nebraska will get to where they need to be. These are the type of games that will help them grow into a better team and the wins will come eventually.

The 0-2 hole is going to be a tough one to crawl out of, but fans shouldn’t have expected a Big Ten Championship in year one. The schedule is tough and there are so many other teams in the conference better than the Cornhuskers. Year one is essentially a free pass for Frost, but these games against Troy are the ones the program needs to be winning.

It didn’t help that Nebraska was without starting quarterback Adrian Martinez, but losing to Troy isn’t exactly going to instill confidence in the fan base. This is just one game though and Nebraska still has plenty of time this season to try and rebound from a rough start. Hopefully they can right the ship soon, but doing so against Michigan in Ann Arbor next week won’t be the easiest task.

Don’t give up hope, Big Red! Scott Frost turned around an awful Central Florida program and he’s going to get Nebraska football back on the right track. We just have to be patient because this year is going to result in some growing pains.
