The Kansas City Chiefs went into Pittsburgh to walk away with a victory to start the season 2-0 in a roller coaster of a game.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a roller coaster of a game in Pittsburgh. The Chiefs blew the door off the hinges in the first quarter of the game with three touchdowns.

Starting off by forcing a three and out for the Steelers offense, Pittsburgh fielded a short punt to avoid Tyreek Hill, and De’Anthony Thomas ended up taking it all the way down to the ten-yard line. Kansas City was quick to put points up on the board by getting the ball to Chris Conely for a touchdown.

Throughout the first quarter, the Chiefs defense continued to get consistent pressure on Ben Roethlisberger. Without having to put together blitz packages, Kansas City was getting great pressure with three or four guys.

The Chiefs offense finished the first quarter with a 21-0 lead. Sammy Watkins made multiple impressive catches getting involved early. He was also apart of a jet sweep that led to another touchdown for the Kansas City offense a couple plays later.

The second quarter was not as nice to the Chiefs. After Justin Houston pushes the right tackle back into Big Ben and strips the ball out of his hands, Chris Jones picked it up and took it for a touchdown. That play was erased after a holding call against Orlando Scandrick. Big Ben then turned around and torched the Chiefs secondary for big play after big play.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The tables had turned it seemed as the Pittsburgh offense proceeded to get hot and the Chiefs struggled to move the ball. The Chiefs had no answer for the wide receiver screens that Pittsburgh continued to call. Kansas City continued to hurt themselves with nine penalties in the first half.

After consistently getting pressure in the first quarter, the Chiefs started dropping back into coverage sending only three players. Attempting blitzes hurt Kansas City as Ben got rid of the ball in the direction the blitz came from. Roethlisberger continued to eat the Chiefs defense alive in the second quarter leading the Steelers to tie the game just before the half after a touchdown pass that was through to be over the line of scrimmage.

Kansas City opened up the second half with a pass from Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill for his first catch of the game going for 36 yards. The next play Mahomes went deep to Watkins, but the ball was slightly overthrown. That didn’t stop the Chiefs offense as Mahomes throws a dime to Travis Kelce for a 25-yard touchdown over the middle.

It didn’t take long though for Pittsburgh to return with a touchdown of their own after numerous penalties on the Chiefs defense. The Steelers continued to own the time of possession keeping the Chiefs defense tired and gassed.

The Chiefs offense still continued to move the ball quickly down the field. Kansas City finally got a defensive stop for the first time since the first quarter at the end of the third. The offense took advantage by driving down for a touchdown to take a 14 point lead.

While Kansas City forced the Steelers to punt once again the following drive, the Chiefs were forced to take the ball at the one-yard line. Pittsburgh’s defense bullied their way through to tackle Kareem Hunt in the end zone for a safety.

With the lead by only 12 points, Bob Sutton’s defense continued to get pressure with a sack by Allen Bailey. Pittsburgh was forced to punt once again giving the Chiefs the football with just under ten minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs moved the ball down the field with little problem until Chris Conley fumbled the football giving Pittsburgh the ball with just over five minutes left in the game. The first play Roethlisberger connects with his tight end Jesse James who was covered by Dee Ford for a major gain.

Pittsburgh led down the field ending the drive with a diving touchdown by Roethlisberger making it a one-score game once again and under two minutes to go in the game.

It wasn’t enough as the Pittsburgh defense failed to stop Kansas City from getting a first down and running down the clock. Patrick Mahomes was nearly flawless throwing for six touchdowns and zero interceptions on the day. He continued to make it look easy as he picked apart the Steelers defense. It’s easy to say that he has easily exceeded expectations coming into the season.

While there was plenty to be frustrated about, there were a lot of little-unnoticed things in this game that should give fans some comfort. Kansas City’s defense will be the first thing I review when the All 22 comes out on Tuesday.
