While it’s exciting to have a new quarterback under center, Kansas City Chiefs fans need to calm it down because some expectations are getting ridiculous.

If I were to survey ten Kansas City Chiefs fans before the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers and ask them “How do you think this season will go?”, the answers would all be pretty different. They’d probably range from “They’ll have a losing record” to “THEY’RE GONNA WIN THE SUPER BOWL!!!!”

Yeah, first of all, chill out. Second of all, the Chiefs are NOT going to win the Super Bowl. No, I don’t have a time machine, but it’s a pretty safe bet that the Chiefs aren’t going to win it all for multiple reasons.

For one, the only AFC quarterbacks to have won the Super Bowl since the 2001 season are Tom Brady, Joe Flacco, Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger. Flacco is obviously the winner in the “One of these things is not like the other” game. He just happened to get hot at the right time during that year’s postseason and is now listed with some elite names.

The Kansas City Chiefs might be a talented team in 2018, I’m certainly not arguing that, but predicting them to win the Super Bowl is insane. This is a team that hasn’t been able to get past the Divisional Round of the playoffs for the last two decades. They might have a new quarterback now, but that means there will be growing pains to work through.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

I’ve already written a post about how fans need to chill out on Patrick Mahomes, but now I had to write a post about the 2018 expectations as well. Teams RARELY make a deep January run with a young quarterback at the helm.

Sure, Brady did it in 2001 and Roethlisberger did so in 2005, but they’re two future Hall of Famers. We don’t know what Mahomes is yet and shouldn’t expect him to lead a franchise to the Super Bowl in his first year.

What really pushed me to write this article was that two writers from Sports Illustrated predicted the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl and another had them making it, but losing. Just stop with these predictions because they’re ridiculous!

Once the Chiefs can prove to me that they can make it past the Divisional Round of the playoffs, I might buy in (keyword being might). Until that day comes, however, why should any Chiefs fans feel confident in them making it to and WINNING the Super Bowl? I sure as hell don’t.
