Nebraska football ended up canceling their season opener on Saturday due to a nasty storm that rolled through Lincoln. This could end badly for the Cornhuskers.

Nebraska football fans were more than excited when Saturday finally rolled around. It was here! The beginning of the Scott Frost era was finally here!

Well, not so fast, Big Red faithful. Mother Nature had other ideas for the Cornhuskers, as a serious storm rolled through and forced the program to cancel its first game ever due to weather. Husker fans weren’t too pleased that they’d have to wait another week to begin the Scott Frost era.

It might not seem like a big deal considering Nebraska was only set to play Akron last weekend, but the opening weekend of college football is played for a reason. It’s to give smaller schools a chance to earn some dough while playing against much better competition and for the bigger schools, it gives them an opportunity to go through the motions.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers

For a program like Nebraska, who is on its third head coach in the past five years, the season opener being played against Akron would have been nice to have. Now the Cornhuskers will be opening the season against Colorado, a Pac 12 school who once faced the Huskers every year when both were members of the Big 12.

While Colorado had a losing campaign a season ago, they’re still a Power-5 school and that’s not quite the opposition a rebuilding program wants to face in their first game of the year. Not only that, but Colorado will come into the game with a huge advantage.

Yes, the game is being played in Lincoln, but the Buffaloes got to play in their season opener. They now know what to improve on after a week while the Huskers don’t have that luxury.

The Buffs destroyed their week one opponent, the Colorado State Rams of the Mountain West, to the tune of 45-13. It’s safe to say they were the better team last week and now they’ll have a lot of momentum following them to Lincoln.

Nebraska, once again, does not have that luxury. The Scott Frost era is beginning this weekend (finally), but it will now come against a much tougher opponent. Colorado isn’t a guaranteed victory for the Cornhuskers and not getting to play against Akron last weekend could really effect the Huskers more than one might think.

It is worth noting, however, that Frost had a game canceled last year while he was with Central Florida, and that season sure ended just fine for the Knights. Maybe everything will be just fine for Big Red.

Perhaps this is all just me being a paranoid Nebraska football fan, but I really hope this canceled game doesn’t come back to bite the Cornhuskers in the butt.
