The Kansas City Royals are about to begin a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles. Both of these teams are awful and this series might very well decide who will win the honor of having the first overall pick next year.

It’s hard to believe, but just four years ago the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles were two of the best teams in all of Major League Baseball. Both teams made it all the way to the 2014 American League Championship Series, where the Royals ultimately swept the O’s in four games.

Now, fast forward four years later, and the Royals and Orioles are the two worst teams in the entire league. So, what happened?

Well, the Royals went to the World Series in both 2014 and 2015, winning it in the 2015 season over the New York Mets. The Orioles didn’t go to the postseason that year, but did punch their ticket in 2016, making it in as the second Wild Card team.

More from Kansas City Royals

That game came down to the wire, going extra innings, but the Blue Jays walked it off while Baltimore left their best reliever at the time in the bullpen. Ouch, man.

Two years removed from that game and the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles are both downright awful. In the Orioles’ defense, they play in one of the best divisions in baseball, having to play both the Red Sox and the Yankees on a regular basis.

The Royals can’t use that argument, as the Indians are leading their division, but are easily the weakest division leader at the moment. Cleveland has had a pretty easy run of it to the playoffs, getting to face off against the Royals, White Sox, Tigers, and Twins for the majority of their games. Gotta like those odds.

All season long, Royals fans have been constantly monitoring the standings, but not because of the Wild Card standings or anything like that. No, they’re comparing the Royals’ record with the Orioles’ current record to see which team is worse and will win that first overall pick in next year’s draft.

As of Thursday evening, the Orioles are 40-94 and the Royals are 42-91. These are two teams who just FOUR YEARS AGO were in the ALCS. Crazy!

Anyway, yes, as of now, the O’s have the edge over the Royals, but things can change in a hurry. The Royals and Orioles have gone back and forth with who’s worse throughout the season and this weekend we’ll finally get to see them match-up head-to-head… Lucky us.

The Royals have been hot recently, winning four of their last five games. Will those winning ways continue against the worst team in baseball? We’ll find out this weekend.
