Kansas City Chiefs: Defense was dominated by Chase Daniel
The Kansas City Chiefs defense continues to show significant concerns as backup quarterback Chase Daniels picks them apart on Saturday afternoon.
The Kansas City Chiefs had their third preseason game on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Chicago to take on Matt Nagy and the Bears. Chicago elected to not play their starters for this game and it seemed to not slow them down at all.
Backup quarterback Chase Daniel, former Chiefs quarterback, picked apart the Chiefs starting defense with his offense of entire backups. Throwing 15/18 for 198 yards and two touchdowns along with 47 rushing yards, Daniel looked like a starting quarterback against Kansas City’s starting defense.
The major concern continues to be the Chiefs secondary. Outside of Kendall Fuller, the Chiefs are slim in starting talent without both starting safeties on the field. Cornerback David Amerson was torched on numerous plays, two in one drive leading to a touchdown in the back of the end zone by a rookie.
Newly acquired Orlando Scandrick saw starting time with Steven Nelson still in concussion protocol but had his own struggles giving up a touchdown to wide receiver Kevin White who scored the first touchdown of his career. Scandrick bit on a double move that left White wide open over the top.

It was also disappointing to see the defensive front not getting to the quarterback more often. Outside linebacker Tanoh Kpassagnon made a remarkable play getting under the pads of his tackle to lay a big hit on Chase Daniel for a sack only to be called for roughing the passer. That penalty is one of many this preseason that is an absolute joke.
For the majority of the game, the Bears were able to make quick, short passes to pick apart the Chiefs defense. Many of those short routes turned into big gains as tackling seemed to be an issue as well. If the secondary cannot allow more time for the pass rush to get home, it’s going to be a long season.
While Scandrick got beat for the touchdown early in the game, we didn’t really see his name pop up after that. We know that he’s aggressive in jumping routes which is what he was looking to do on that touchdown play. David Amerson doesn’t even look like he’s trying at this point as he is always a few steps behind his man. I still believe that Scandrick should start over Amerson come Week 1.
The bright side of today’s game was seeing inside linebackers Reggie Ragland and Anthony Hitchens get their first playing time of the season. The duo tied for most tackles on the Chiefs defense with six apiece. While the first tackle by Hitchens that resulted in a facemask wasn’t pretty, the two got better as the game went on and they knocked some rust off.
While it’s a preseason game and none of it matters, the concerns are very real for the Chiefs defense. Given the tough schedule in the first six games of the season, we have to see more from that side of the ball if Kansas City wants to compete this year.
Brett Veach needs to be looking to make a drastic move for secondary help before the season starts. We know that he will be looking for guys dropped from other rosters, but a trade at this point might be the only option. Kansas City needs desperate help at the cornerback position if they are going to contend in the upcoming season. Despite getting pressure, the Bears were able to move the ball without problem on Saturday.
Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was saved last season due to personnel being the problem, but if he can’t get the defense looking better than it did against Chicago’s backups soon, there needs to be additional change and quick.
