It feels as if April 27, 2017 was light years ago. April 27 was the day the Chiefs organization drafted an organization-shifting player in Patrick Mahomes.

In 2017 going into the NFL Draft, former general manager John Dorsey and his staff had their eyes on a prize. A prize that provided a new culture, new dynamics, and more importantly a shift of a new, and far more interesting future for the Kansas City Chiefs organization. If you have not guessed already, the prize’s name was Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes, out of Texas Tech, symbolized himself to be about as close as a real-life athlete can get to a “Create-A-Player” on the Madden NFL video games. His arm strength, vision, and elite mindset for the game of football appears to vary in the 90 range on a scale out of 100.

When I first watched Mahomes highlights before he was even a Chief, his game always reminded me of a player I created on Madden in junior high. A player that held unrealistic qualities, and attributes. Mahomes has quickly shifted the “unrealistic qualities” and turned them into realistic potential, which as a matter of fact, is something I have yet to see transpire in the NFL today.

As a Chiefs fan, I do not think I have ever seen so much hype regarding a certain player. So many dynamics apply to the hype, and when I mean so many, I mean SO MANY.

Whether it is because he was the first quarterback drafted in the first round by the organization since drafting Todd Blackledge in 1983, or because he is a player with superstar potential, the hype exists. The list goes deep, and the list is long. The hype is there for a reason, no matter the angle you look.

After powering through the bittersweet Alex Smith era, the Mahomes era is nearly here. Thus far, there have been glimpses of promise, and glimpses of “needs improvement” in the preseason. But, whatever the case at the certain point in time, what Chiefs Kingdom has witnessed from Mahomes is something special.

Let this article serve as a reminder that the wait will be worth it. Because, what Mahomes possesses in the pocket will be something the NFL rarely sees.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Back-tracking a bit, what happened between April 27, 2017 to the day the Chiefs open up their season against the Chargers will not be forgotten, as it shouldn’t be.

A playoff appearance against the Titans (ouch, but still – a playoff appearance), a MVP-caliber season from Alex Smith, and pretty much everything an average football team will experience happened to the Chiefs. It is engraved in history, and it isn’t going to go anywhere. I mean, it was fun… right?

Now, the ride is going to get a heckuva lot more exciting with number 15 behind center ready to unleash his cannon, knock on wood. Time will tell on how successful he will be, but besides the fact, this is an era that provides change, which is something the Chiefs may need to “wake them up”.

Just let the clock keep ticking and ticking. The time is closer to striking “zero” than it was yesterday. The fun thing about this countdown is, that tomorrow – it’ll be even closer.

The Patrick Mahomes era is almost here, folks. If you have waited this long, there is no need to go back. So buckle up, and let’s get ready for something special the Kansas City Chiefs brutally deserve.
