KC Chiefs fans got to see Patrick Mahomes in more action on Friday in the Chiefs’ preseason game versus the Atlanta Falcons. This game was a very good example of the type of quarterback Mahomes will be throughout his career.

When the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to the tenth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and selected Patrick Mahomes, they didn’t do it to have him ride the bench for many years (Aaron Rodgers behind Brett Favre in Green Bay for instance).

No, the point of trading up for Mahomes was to have him become the quarterback of the future, something the Chiefs hadn’t attempted to find in the first round in over three decades. That’s what made this so exciting for Chiefs fans. We hadn’t experienced this type of hype for a first round quarterback before because most of us hadn’t SEEN one here in Kansas City in our lifetime!

After holding a clipboard throughout most of his rookie season, it’s finally Mahomes’ time to shine as the starting quarterback for the KC Chiefs. Now, we all knew going into this season that Mahomes wasn’t going to be like Alex Smith. To many, that’s what made the switch-up so great.

Finally! The Chiefs would have a quarterback who isn’t afraid to take risks and sling the football down the field. Mahomes is certainly that type of player, but it comes at a price sometimes. The punishment for being so daring down the field is that interceptions are more prone to happen.

We saw both the best and the worst of Patrick Mahomes in the preseason game against the Falcons. The worst was obviously the pick Mahomes threw on his second drive. The Chiefs were deep in their own territory, Mahomes let the pigskin fly, and it was intercepted (clear as day) by Damontae Kazee.

The interception looked bad, but we soon saw how quickly Mahomes could redeem himself from those mistakes. On his final drive of the game, Mahomes and the offense had little clock to work with. With 28 seconds remaining in the half, Mahomes fired the football down the field and hit a wide open Tyreek Hill, who took the ball the next five or ten yards for the touchdown.

That 69-yard touchdown pass to Hill showed why it’s okay for Mahomes to be bold when he throws down the field. Yes, he’s going to make mistakes sometimes, but he’ll make up for it later on. That’s something that Alex Smith couldn’t do, and this is coming from someone who really liked Alex Smith.

This preseason game was a great preview for the type of player that Patrick Mahomes will be. He’ll be confident in the pocket and throw some amazing deep balls.

On the flip side, however, he’ll also throw more interceptions than Alex Smith ever did. If he makes up for it the way he did against Atlanta though, I think Chiefs Kingdom will be more than okay with Mahomes being this type of player.
