The moral of the story is simply put, there are no sacred cows.

Teams, even the best, certainly don’t always just draft their way or sign free agents to become great. When a player has a high trade value and the team isn’t going anywhere, the player needs to be moved.

More from Kansas City Royals

This is a lesson the Oakland A’s learned a long time ago and it became the subject of a book and subsequent movie. The Indians have taken a similar approach with far better results.

This is especially relevant with names such as Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield. In the event both are still with the team when they win again, neither will be a central figure or major impact reason of why it happened.

Small market teams must always be in search of younger and more controllable talent. Simply hoping these two players will be solid contributors well into their 30’s while the organization appears destined to lose 100 games doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.
