The KC Chiefs played in their first preseason game on Thursday night and Patrick Mahomes didn’t light the world on fire like everyone thought he would. Do not panic over this.

NFL preseason games are played for a reason. They’re mostly to give the younger players a chance to display their talents and help them make an NFL roster. They’re also important to help decide what the depth chart will look like for teams. For the starters, however, preseason isn’t a big deal and that’s what Kansas City Chiefs fans need to remember after Thursday’s game vs the Texans.

This is especially important to note when it comes to Patrick Mahomes and the “not so exciting” two drives he led against Houston. The most important thing with Mahomes in preseason is that he doesn’t get injured. Anything else isn’t something KC Chiefs fans should worry about too much.

Mahomes went 5 of 7 for 33 yards and was sacked one time. Mahomes started off a perfect 5 for 5, but saw a lot of pressure on the second drive and was forced to get the ball out quicker on that series.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes and the offense looked solid in the first series, as he completed a pass to Travis Kelce, then to Tyreek Hill, and Kareem Hunt on a third down attempt that was short of the sticks. He later connected with Hunt and Kelce on the second drive, but the offensive line struggled to keep defenders away from the Chiefs young quarterback.

A lot of fans were excited to see Patrick Mahomes in action on Thursday, but his five completed passes didn’t go further than 14 yards. It’s safe to say that fans were hoping to see the kid sling it more, but he didn’t have time on that second series to do so, as defenders were in his face almost immediately.

Let’s all keep in mind that this was only a preseason game (and the first one at that) and not to jump to conclusions on Mahomes yet. Just because he threw for only 33 yards does not mean he’s going to be a bust. The important thing here is that Mahomes left the game uninjured and the offense will watch the tape this week and get the kinks worked out to help the kid succeed in the future.

Mahomes looked poised on the first series, but he had very little time to throw on the second offensive series. If the offensive line can’t protect him, then it doesn’t matter how good that arm of his is, we won’t be seeing deep balls. This was just a brief glimpse at the first-team offense, so let’s give them another few weeks before we start panicking.

No one predicted Chad Henne to have the throw of the night or for rookie Chase Litton to be the talk of the game, but that’s just the way preseason goes sometime. We’ve seen Patrick Mahomes in action briefly before this game and he looked just fine.

Remember that there are a lot of jitters in the preseason and Mahomes hadn’t played since the end of the 2017 season. He will be fine, so please don’t lose sleep over Thursday’s performance.
